The application in practice

Weekend freezer monitoring at Llano ISD

A closer look at the challenge, the monitoring approach and the outcome described in Monnit’s application guide.

01

The challenge

Llano Independent School District needed to protect cafeteria stock outside school hours. Equipment faults and power interruptions could remain unnoticed until staff returned.

02

The monitoring setup

Staff installed leaded temperature sensors with the housings outside walk-in units and probes inside. A gateway in each cafeteria relayed measurements to iMonnit, with notifications directed to nominated staff.

03

The reported outcome

Within the first few weeks, the system flagged a freezer problem caused by a blown fuse over a weekend. Monnit describes the district using remote alerts and automatic records to supplement its food-storage procedures across its cafeterias.

A practical starting point

Measure. Understand. Act.

01

Where to start

Cover walk-in coolers and freezers at each kitchen. Give every sensor a school, room and unit name that an on-call colleague can recognise.

02

A change worth investigating

A freezer warms outside school hours, when no kitchen staff are onsite.

Example scenario. Set limits and timing for your own site.
03

Turn the alert into action

Notify the named duty contact, arrange access and follow the food-storage response plan. Document the readings and stock decisions.

Measurements to consider

Use these as a shortlist. The right model depends on the range, environment, installation and accuracy you need.

What matters for this application

An alert needs someone who can enter the site. Test holiday cover and gateway connectivity before closing for a break.

How do the sensors connect?

ALTA sensors need a compatible gateway, internet connection and monitoring software. Suitable Wi-Fi models connect through a compatible Wi-Fi network. Confirm radio frequency, coverage and power arrangements at the actual installation points before choosing equipment.

How quickly will an alert arrive?

Timing depends on sensor settings, reporting intervals, connectivity and notification rules. Email, SMS and voice options vary by service and plan. Test a controlled event, check that the nominated person receives it and confirm what happens if a device stops reporting.

Understand software and alerts →
What should we prepare for a pilot?

Bring a site plan, the equipment or spaces to monitor, expected conditions, required accuracy and the names of the people who respond. Agree a trial period and a review date. Compare sensor readings with an appropriate reference and document any gaps in coverage or response.
