The application in practice

Offering renters visibility into their units

A closer look at the challenge, the monitoring approach and the outcome described in Monnit’s application guide.

01

The challenge

A self-storage operator wanted to detect roof leaks and changing storage conditions before customers discovered damage. The service also needed to move easily between rented units.

02

The monitoring setup

A pilot combined humidity, temperature and water detection, later adding door and motion sensors. Sensors were assigned to units in iMonnit, with selected information and notifications available to renters.

03

The reported outcome

Monnit describes storm-related water alerts that helped staff respond and arrange roof repairs. The example also shows how a monitoring service can complement existing locks, inspections and insurance arrangements without replacing them.

Case-study information and photography: Monnit. Reported results relate to the installation described; your project’s design and results will depend on its requirements.

A practical starting point

Mål. forstå. handle.

01

Where to start

Begin with units beneath known roof risks, external walls and climate-controlled zones. Add access monitoring only where it serves an agreed purpose.

02

A change worth investigating

Humidity stays above the agreed storage limit or leak detection identifies water in a unit.

Example scenario. Set limits and timing for your own site.
03

Turn the alert into action

Notify the authorised contact, inspect the area and document any affected goods under the facility's procedure.

Measurements to consider

Use these as a shortlist. The right model depends on the range, environment, installation and accuracy you need.

What matters for this application

Agree tenant consent and account access. Monitoring is not insurance and cannot establish that every stored item is protected.

How do the sensors connect?

ALTA sensors need a compatible gateway, internet connection and monitoring software. Suitable Wi-Fi models connect through a compatible Wi-Fi network. Confirm radio frequency, coverage and power arrangements at the actual installation points before choosing equipment.

How quickly will an alert arrive?

Timing depends on sensor settings, reporting intervals, connectivity and notification rules. Email, SMS and voice options vary by service and plan. Test a controlled event, check that the nominated person receives it and confirm what happens if a device stops reporting.

What should we prepare for a pilot?

Bring a site plan, the equipment or spaces to monitor, expected conditions, required accuracy and the names of the people who respond. Agree a trial period and a review date. Compare sensor readings with an appropriate reference and document any gaps in coverage or response.
